After a prolonged tussle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the makers of the controversial Malayalam film Janaki v/s State of Kerala have agreed to make key changes to ensure a smooth release. The film, which tackles the sensitive subject of sexual assault and stars veteran actor-politician Suresh Gopi alongside Anupama Parameswaran, had been facing delays due to objections over its title and content.

According to reports, the CBFC had initially recommended a staggering 96 cuts, citing issues primarily with the use of the name "Janaki" in the title and various dialogues within the film. However, following multiple rounds of discussions and legal interventions, the board has now scaled down its demand to just two cuts and a change in title.

The film will now be released as Janaki V v/s State of Kerala. Additionally, two instances within the movie where the character’s name "Janaki" is used will be removed as per the CBFC’s final directive.

“This is a case that we can win 100% on appeal. But, the producers have taken a commercial call. They are facing financial losses due to the delay in the film’s release. They also have an OTT deal that they have to adhere to. That’s why, they have agreed to make the changes,” Advocate Haris Beeran told reporters, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

He further confirmed that the High Court has directed the CBFC to issue the censor certificate within three days of the re-submission of the application. This has raised hopes for a timely theatrical release, which is now likely to happen by next Friday.

The film has garnered attention not just for its sensitive subject matter but also for its potent star cast. With Suresh Gopi returning to a courtroom drama, and Anupama Parameswaran taking on a gritty lead role, Janaki V v/s State of Kerala is being pegged as a socially relevant and emotionally charged courtroom drama.

Now that the major roadblocks have been cleared, all eyes are on the film’s theatrical release and its performance at the box office — as well as its eventual debut on OTT.
