The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has unveiled its Islamic Philanthropy Fund, a new initiative designed to leverage Islamic charitable giving to assist some of the world’s most at-risk communities.

This launch marks a key development for IOM as it seeks innovative solutions to provide lifesaving support to over 75 million people displaced by conflict, disaster, and instability, amid escalating global crises.

The Fund was launched just ahead of Ramadan at an event held at the United Nations House in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event was attended by representatives from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Islamic Development Bank (IDB), diplomats, UN agencies, as well as members of the private sector and Islamic philanthropy organizations.

IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasised that, given the complexity of current crises displacing unprecedented numbers of people and causing immense suffering, it is crucial to tap into the spirit of Islamic charity.

She highlighted the importance of this effort in alleviating hardship, empowering communities to rebuild, and preserving the dignity of those in need.

“We are both honored and excited to announce IOM’s Islamic Philanthropy Fund as a means to help us engage Muslims around the world and channel their contributions through a trusted and efficient platform, maximising their positive impact,” she said.

At the launch event, IOM signed memorandums of understanding with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, strengthening support for the Fund and enhancing its effectiveness and impact.

In its first year, the Fund is focusing on the Sudan Emergency Response, providing cash assistance to displaced families, individuals stranded at borders, and communities in critical need of humanitarian aid.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 11.5 million people displaced internally and nearly 30 million requiring urgent assistance.

A newly created advisory body will offer continuous guidance to ensure that the Fund operates with integrity, transparency, and effectiveness in meeting its goals.

The Fund's long-term goal is to establish a robust and sustainable income stream to support migrant and displaced communities worldwide, ensuring the safety and dignity of those affected.
