Inferno Ravages Kano Market: Traders Face Devastating Losses
A devastating fire outbreak has razed the Sabuwar Lale furniture market, situated in Tal’udu, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State. The inferno, which eyewitnesses reported began around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, rapidly engulfed numerous shops before the Kano State Fire Service could arrive on the scene.
The scale of destruction left traders in shock. Bashir Ustaz, one of the affected shop owners, recounted being called at approximately 3 a.m. with news of the fire. Upon his arrival, he was confronted with the complete destruction of his shop and all his belongings. Ustaz lamented the sudden turn of events, noting that just the day prior, the market had been bustling with activity, only to be reduced to ashes by morning.
Adamu Mansur, widely known as Madaki, who serves as the Vice Chairman of the market, corroborated the timeline of the incident, stating that the fire raged from about 2:30 a.m. until dawn. He expressed hope for divine compensation for the extensive losses incurred by the traders.
While a precise estimation of the total value of damages was not immediately available, Madaki highlighted the immense personal losses, detailing how some individual shops lost furniture worth millions of naira. He cited his own shop as an example, where over 40 sets of furniture intended for delivery that very day were destroyed. Among these, four sets alone were valued at more than N5 million, and three others exceeded N4 million in worth.
In light of the catastrophic impact, Madaki issued an earnest appeal to the Kano State Government and benevolent individuals to extend assistance to the affected traders, emphasizing the profound scale of their financial ruin and loss of livelihood. Initial reports indicate that the fire completely consumed at least 11 permanent shops and approximately 20 temporary structures.
Firefighters from the Kano State Fire Service engaged in a protracted battle against the blaze for several hours, eventually bringing it under control after the early morning prayers. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. However, traders underscored that the fire had eradicated their primary source of income, leaving many facing an uncertain future. As of the time of this report, the Kano State Fire Service had not released an official statement regarding the cause of the fire.
