Inferno Rages: Kasoa New Market Engulfed in Blaze, Over 100 Stores Destroyed

A devastating inferno tore through the Kasoa New Market on the afternoon of Sunday, January 4, 2026, leaving over 100 mini-stores decimated and traders in a state of profound despair. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was alerted to the disaster via a distress call received at 4:50 PM. Recognizing the immense scale of the fire, a rare and strategic cross-regional mobilization of emergency services was initiated. Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, confirmed that a total of eight high-capacity fire tenders were deployed to the scene: two from the Central Region command and six from the Greater Accra Region. This extensive effort was crucial in bringing the intense flames under control after a grueling operation.
Firefighting efforts were significantly hampered by several critical challenges. The market's high concentration of combustible goods, ranging from edible oils and food staples to dry hardware, allowed the fire to spread with alarming speed. Furthermore, firefighters lamented the severe lack of clear access paths, as unauthorized structures and containers had encroached upon the market's designated streets, making it nearly impossible for the heavy engines to maneuver. A critical water shortage compounded these difficulties; officials noted the absence of even a single hydrant, forcing tenders to commute considerable distances, often taking 30 to 45 minutes for replenishment. The mixed-cargo nature of the market, with various combustibles sold together without segregation, also contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
