Zambia is currently embroiled in a significant constitutional dispute, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announcing a peaceful picket and demonstration on December 12 outside the National Assembly. EFF leader Kasonde Mwenda stated this action directly opposes attempts by those in power to push through constitutional amendments that neither reflect the will of the Zambian people nor uphold the nation's democratic foundations. Mwenda, in a statement from Lusaka, described the demonstration as a peaceful, lawful, and patriotic response to amendments drafted without proper consultation, transparency, or respect for citizens.
Mwenda emphasized the EFF's commitment to defending democracy and constitutionalism, warning against tampering with the Constitution for political convenience. He expects around 500 participants, including members of the public, civil society, church groups, and NGOs, all united in protecting Zambia's democratic order. The party has formally requested security from the Zambia Police Service to ensure a safe event, in compliance with the Public Order Act. Mwenda reiterated that Zambia belongs to its citizens, not to a few individuals seeking to manipulate the Constitution for narrow political gain, urging vigilance and stressing that amendments should result from openness, consultation, and national consensus, not secrecy or shortcuts.
