Imo Workers Jubilant as Gov Uzodinma Boosts Minimum Wage to N104,000

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for civil servants, raising it to N104,000. This bold adjustment marks a substantial jump from the previous N76,000 minimum wage and positions Imo State among the highest-paying states in Nigeria. The announcement was made late on Tuesday during a meeting with various labour union leaders at the Government House in Owerri.
Beyond civil servants, other categories of workers are also set to benefit from similar upward reviews. Medical doctors in the state will see their minimum wage soar from N215,000 to an impressive N503,000, while lecturers in tertiary institutions will now earn N222,000, a significant rise from their previous N119,000. These adjustments are part of the governor's commitment to improving workers' welfare across the board.
Governor Uzodinma explained that the decision was a direct response to the economic realities faced by citizens since his administration took office in 2020. He cited challenges such as insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal and ongoing wage disputes. The governor emphasized the importance of a cordial relationship with organized labour, stating, “When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows. This is our way of investing in Imo people.”
The sustainability of these new wages was addressed by both the governor and his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Mr. Ogunwike Nwachuku. Nwachuku, in an interview, clarified that the increase was a deliberate move to ensure civil servants live a life of dignity and are motivated to contribute effectively to the state's development. He dismissed concerns about sustainability, pointing to the administration's proven track record of sustaining previous wage increments, from N18,000 to N30,000, then N40,000, and N70,000, before the latest N104,000 adjustment. He asserted that the current benchmark would also be sustained.
The financial health of Imo State, according to Governor Uzodinma, has significantly improved, making these wage increases feasible. He revealed that the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has surged from N400 million to over N3 billion monthly. Concurrently, federal allocations to the state have risen from N5-7 billion in 2020 to approximately N14 billion. Furthermore, the state's debt profile has dramatically reduced from over N280 billion in 2020 to less than N100 billion, underscoring a robust financial turnaround.
Uzodinma attributed the increase in federal allocations to President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy, stressing the responsibility of governors to ensure these benefits reach ordinary citizens. He also highlighted his administration's other achievements, including significant investments in rebuilding collapsed infrastructure, particularly roads, and strengthening security operations across the state. Reforms in the health sector, such as a health insurance scheme and upgraded facilities, were also noted as part of his commitment to public welfare. Additionally, the state government is set to commence payment of the final batch of N16 billion gratuity owed to pensioners on August 27, further demonstrating its commitment to clearing workers’ entitlements.
Leaders of organized labour in Imo State warmly received the governor's decision. Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), hailed the wage increase as "a victory for the entire workforce in the state." He praised Uzodinma for not only rescuing workers from economic hardship but also elevating Imo among states offering the highest minimum wage. Similarly, Uchenna Ibe, the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), commended the governor's "strong political will" in undertaking such significant projects, including the wage increment.
