IMD issues thunderstorm warning and rain alert for Mumbai

Richa PintoMumbai: On Monday evening, the IMD issued a nowcast warning for Mumbai, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light spells of rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places over the next 3 to 4 hours.The warning was issued at 5:15 pm on Monday, urging residents to take precautions while moving outdoors. By around 7 pm, areas like Vikhroli, Goregaon, Mulund, and Marol saw a light drizzle.This alert is part of a broader five-day forecast released by the IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, which indicates thunder and rain activity across coastal Maharashtra, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

A yellow alert has also been issued.According to the IMD's district-level forecast, Mumbai is likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall throughout the week, accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated locations. The forecast categorises the probability of such weather events in the city as "very likely" through May 23.Neighbouring districts such as Raigad are expected to receive even more intense rainfall, with warnings for heavy to very heavy showers and stronger wind gusts over the next few days.Meanwhile, day temperatures in the city continued to remain near normal as IMD Colaba and Santacruz on Monday recorded 33.4 degrees and 34 degrees, which were almost near normal.
