Campaigns Heat Up in Nyanza Ahead of By-Elections

Political activity is intensifying in Nyanza, Kenya, as candidates prepare for upcoming by-elections in the Ugunja and Kasipul constituencies. The exact dates for these elections are pending the reconstitution of the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), but potential candidates are actively campaigning.

In Kasipul, Boyd Were, son of the late former MP Ong'ondo Were, has announced his candidacy and has received the support of ODM leaders such as Governor Gladys Wanga and MP Opondo Kaluma. Robert Ajwang, also known as Money Bior, is conducting a door-to-door campaign to gain support.

The Ugunja seat became vacant after Opiyo Wandayi was appointed Energy Cabinet Secretary by President William Ruto. Five aspirants are vying for the ODM ticket to replace Wandayi: Moses Omondi (the current constituency manager), Joseph Aluru (a businessman and insurance practitioner), MJ Okumu (a lawyer and former British soldier), Sam Okoyo, and Chris Budo (a businessman).

Joseph Aluru, who has run for the seat twice before, believes party politics will heavily influence the outcome. Given the ODM party's popularity in the constituency, the candidate who secures the party's nomination is likely to win. Geographical boundaries and the influence of former MP Opiyo Wandayi are also expected to play significant roles. Political analyst Oscar Omondi suggests that Wandayi's endorsement could sway voters, and the rivalry between Governor James Orengo and top ODM leaders may further complicate the contest.

Ugunja constituency comprises three wards: Sigomere, Sidindi, and Ugunja. Fabian Onyango, a political analyst, emphasizes the importance of clan politics, particularly the Uholo clan's push to have one of their own elected. The Uholo clan, with a substantial vote bloc, feels it is their turn to lead, especially since Sidindi ward already holds the CS position.

Moses Omondi, who has served as the Constituency Office Manager for 12 years, aims to continue and enhance the projects initiated by Wandayi. He promises to prioritize public participation in his leadership.

Chris Budo, a graduate of Political Science and Economics with 20 years of experience in humanitarian and development service across several African countries, pledges to focus on poverty alleviation through agriculture, improved healthcare access, and enhanced education outcomes. He intends to pilot an avocado farming project in Siaya.

Joseph Aluru promises to improve bursary distribution and create opportunities for self-sufficiency through collaboration and networking.

Sam Okoyo, running on a Safina party ticket, emphasizes collaboration and innovation to address community needs, drawing on his experience working in London.

Dr. Okumu, a founding member of the ODM, is also seeking the party's nomination. He highlights his past contributions, including initiating the Ugunja bursary fund to support needy students.
