Accra and Kumasi Submerged After Heavy Rainstorm, Poor Drainage Blamed

Heavy rains have caused significant flooding in major cities in Ghana, including Accra and Kumasi. The downpour, experienced on May 17 and 18, 2025, submerged streets and stranded road users, prompting a response from both government agencies and local communities.

In Accra, areas such as Ofankor, Kaneshie, Circle, Awudome, and Ablekuma were heavily affected. A video surfaced showing residents in Agbogba praying as the rains flooded their homes. Similarly, the Kumasi Airport Roundabout area was completely submerged.

Residents of Lakeside in the Adentan Municipality attribute the flooding to poor drainage systems resulting from road construction on the East Legon Hills road. They claim engineers diverted multiple water channels into a single, inadequate outlet. According to Prince Ansah, a local business owner, the road contractors are to blame for the improperly built and unfinished drainage system. He noted that the gutter was not deep enough, lacked proper covering, and was abandoned halfway, causing blockages and subsequent flooding. Another resident, Alex Narh, highlighted that the construction of a main drain from Katamanso and Nkansah Hospital redirected water to their area, exacerbating the problem. He also mentioned that some residents are constructing buildings on natural water paths, further obstructing the flow of water. Residents are calling for government intervention to inspect the area, ensure better planning in future projects, and hold the engineers accountable.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is collaborating with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to restore power supply to areas affected by the flooding in the Greater Accra Region. As a precautionary measure, NADMO directed ECG to temporarily isolate certain locations until floodwaters recede and safety conditions permit power restoration. Affected areas include Borteyman Stadium, Affordable Housing, Borteyman Township, Little Roses, Lakeside, Nanakrom, Kissieman, Dome Pillar 2, Christian Village, School Junction, School Junction Melcom, Nmaidzor Zoomlion, University Farms, Trasacco 3rd Gate, Legon Hill, Santoe, Blue Kiosk, Adenta ECG Office, and Madina Islamic University.

ECG emphasized that safety is paramount and power will be restored as soon as it is safe to do so, following NADMO’s guidelines. The company urged customers to report individual or localized outages, fallen poles, or sagging lines through the ECG Call Center, nearest ECG office, or social media channels. The collaborative effort aims to mitigate the impact of the floods and ensure a safe return to normalcy in power supply.
