"If this party still has elders… I am one" - Kufuor laments being sidelined by NPP

Published 12 hours ago2 minute read

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep disappointment over what he describes as deliberate sidelining by his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite his years of sacrifice and leadership.

Speaking when Abetifi MP and flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong paid him a courtesy visit, the 85-year-old statesman did not mince words about his frustration.

“If this party still has elders… I am one,” Kufuor said. “Have I deteriorated to the point where, after being fed, I’d claim I haven’t eaten? No, I haven’t reached that stage yet. My mind and memory are intact.”

Kufuor, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2009 and played a pivotal role in shaping the NPP’s modern identity, lamented that he is no longer consulted on important party matters.

He stated that even the National Council, the party’s highest decision-making body between congresses — no longer seeks his counsel.

He warned that sidelining founding figures and experienced leaders could weaken the party’s foundation and alienate loyal supporters.

The former president emphasised that though he has chosen to remain largely quiet, he has been observing the party’s direction closely.

His comments come at a critical time as the NPP navigates internal tensions and prepares for upcoming elections.

Kufuor’s legacy as a unifier and champion of democratic values continues to command respect across Ghana’s political divide. His public expression of disappointment has sparked renewed discussions about inclusivity and respect for institutional memory within the NPP.
