Iconic Fantasy Saga Resurfaces: A Surprise Return After 87 Years!

The musical fantasy franchise, Wicked, has recently emerged as one of the most significant properties in its genre, driven to new heights by stars like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The initial film adaptation from the renowned Broadway stage play garnered over $750 million globally, establishing itself as a monumental box office success. While its sequel, Wicked: For Good, achieved $525 million, a commendable figure, it underscores the franchise's strong appeal. Despite the films being relatively new, the beloved Wicked universe boasts a rich history spanning nearly a century.
This extensive legacy traces back 87 years to the debut of arguably the most influential fantasy movie of all time: The Wizard of Oz. Released on August 25, 1939, this cinematic masterpiece follows the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto, who are transported by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the enchanting and magical Land of Oz. There, they embark on a pivotal quest alongside three new companions. The iconic cast included Judy Garland as Dorothy, Frank Morgan as Professor Marvel, Ray Bolger as Hunk/Scarecrow, Bert Lahr as Zeke/Cowardly Lion, and Jack Haley as Hickory/Tin Man. Directed by Victor Fleming, the film was based on the timeless book by L. Frank Baum, with a script contributed by over 20 writers, including Edgar Allan Woolf, Florence Ryerson, and Noel Langley.
In recent news, it was announced that The Wizard of Oz will return to broadcast television for the first time in almost 30 years. MeTV has secured the rights to air the film, with showings slated to begin later this year in October. The Vice Chairman of Weigel Broadcasting, MeTV's parent company, emphasized the cultural significance of the film, describing The Wizard of Oz as “a shared American experience that was defined by the annual tradition of gathering around the television set.”
Regarding the streaming availability of the modern adaptations, only the first Wicked movie is currently streaming. After its initial theatrical run, it debuted on Peacock before migrating to Prime Video. Its sequel, Wicked: For Good, is presently available exclusively for rent or purchase on Video On Demand (VOD) platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV. However, it is anticipated to conclude its VOD exclusivity soon, with a streaming announcement expected. Given that the first Wicked film began streaming on Peacock last March, it is plausible that the sequel could follow a similar timeline and become available for streaming before the end of next month.
