Ice Cube's 'War of the Worlds' Shocker: Filmed Solo in 15 Days Without Director

Ice Cube recently shared insights into the challenging production of the 2020 film “War of the Worlds,” a loose adaptation of H. G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel. During an interview with Kai Cenat, the acclaimed actor revealed that the movie was shot under highly unusual circumstances amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. His scenes, specifically, were completed in a mere 15 days, a process made even more unique by the absence of the director and any of his co-stars on set.
Ice Cube elaborated on the production's unconventional approach, stating, “We shot it in 15 days, and it was during the pandemic. So the director wasn’t in there. None of the actors was in there. This was the only way we could really shoot the movie.” This method contributed to significant delays in the film's release. Initially, Universal was involved in the production but later sold the rights to Amazon. Further complicating matters, much of the film’s footage outside of Ice Cube’s segments was sourced from real surveillance cameras globally. The extensive task of collecting, building, and editing this diverse footage also played a crucial role in the extended post-production period.
Upon its trailer debut in late July, “War of the Worlds” quickly became a viral sensation. However, its release on July 30th was met with harsh critical reception, briefly holding a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before settling at a dismal 4%. In the film, Ice Cube stars as William Radford, a computer security analyst who finds himself at the heart of a global catastrophe when alien forces launch an invasion of Earth. The cast also includes notable actors such as Eva Longoria, Iman Benson, Henry Hunter Hall, Clark Gregg, and Devon Bostick.
