The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two sisters, Juliet Chukwu and Ngozi Nancy Chukwu, for allegedly masterminding the kidnap of their elder brother, Mr Friday Chukwu.
The sisters, who are natives of Amaeze village in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, were said to have plotted the abduction last month.
Juliet is an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, while Ngozi serves with the Nigeria Immigration Service.
According to PUNCH, the victim was abducted on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
It was alleged that N30 million was paid as ransom before Mr Chukwu was released.
The two sisters were also reportedly involved in the kidnapping of Mr Dennis Igwe, General Manager of China Oriental Mining Company, in the same area earlier this week.
They were reportedly arrested in a hotel while attempting to share N10 million ransom paid for Igwe’s release.
A social media user, Chika Nwoba, who shared details of the case online, alleged that the sisters may have links to other criminal activities in the Ishiagu area.
He accused them of collaborating with criminal elements to stage kidnappings, loot railway materials, and vandalise pipelines in the area.
The Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Chief Emmanuel Ajah, confirmed the arrest.
He said although the incidents occurred outside his jurisdiction, he had officially contacted the Enugu Police Command and the Ebonyi State Command of the Civil Defence Corps.
“Yes, we are aware of the incidents. But they did not happen in my local government. The sisters of Mr Friday Chukwu, who is my friend, have been arrested. They said they are six people involved, so four others are still at large,” he said.
Ajah added that efforts were ongoing to ensure the safety of residents in Ivo and its surroundings.
