Houston Basketball Does Something That Hasn't Been Done in Over 100 Years After Big 12 Title
The Houston Cougars clinched a Big 12 men’s basketball regular season championship on Saturday and in the process did something that hasn’t been done in over 100 years in college basketball.
Houston has won the Big 12 basketball regular season title in both of its first two seasons in the conference. which as the Big 12 Conference noted on X, is historic. The Cougars are the first team to win regular-season conference titles in their first two seasons in a major conference since in 1922 and 1923 as members of the Pacific Coast Conference.

L.J. Cryer scored 20 points and No. 4 Houston beat Cincinnati 73-64 on Saturday. The Cougars, who have won 12 straight over Cincinnati, shot 54% and had a 17-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Cougars now host Kansas on Big Monday at 8:00 p.m. CT before wrapping up the season against Baylor next Saturday.
In the most recent Bracketology, Houston is back to being a No. 1 seed, per ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. Houston improved to 15-4 in Quad 1 and 2 games this season, with all of its losses coming in Quad 1 games.
Meantime, Cincinnati had a chance to get a much-needed resume booster. But the Bearcats remain on the outside looking in on the NCAA Tournament after falling to 17-12 overall and 7-11 in Big 12 Conference play.
