Helicopter Plunges into School Park, Killing Two in Tema

A microlight aircraft crash in Tema in the Greater Accra Region claimed the lives of two people on March 16 after the aircraft, identified by registration number 9G-ADV, fell from the sky and crashed into the Oninku Drive School Park in Tema Community One.

The aircraft struck the TMA Daycare at Site 18 at about 2:49 p.m., triggering a fire and heavy damage at the facility.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze and recover the bodies of the two male occupants.

According to GNFS Public Relations head Desmond Ackah, firefighters reached the site within minutes of receiving the distress call and later handed the victims’ remains over to police authorities.

Authorities confirmed that staff and students of the daycare were evacuated before emergency crews arrived, preventing additional casualties despite damage to the school premises.

Ahmed Abdullia, Assemblyman for the Kwesi Plange Electoral Area, confirmed that no children or staff were injured.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority later identified the aircraft as a microlight traveling from Ho in the Volta Region to Accra.

Aviation specialist Yakubu Akparibo noted that such aircraft are typically used for recreational purposes and are rarely permitted to fly over densely populated areas due to safety concerns.

Authorities have launched a joint investigation involving fire, police, and aviation officials to determine the cause of the crash, while the identities of the victims are yet to be officially confirmed.
