Horror at Sea: Ha Long Bay Tourist Boat Capsizes, Claiming 34 Lives!
A tragic maritime disaster unfolded in Vietnam's iconic Ha Long Bay on Saturday, July 19, 2025, when a tourist boat ferrying families capsized during a sudden and severe storm. The incident, which occurred in the UNESCO World Heritage site, resulted in a significant loss of life, with state media reporting at least 34 fatalities.
The vessel, carrying 48 passengers and five crew members, was overwhelmed by torrential rain and hailstones described as being "as big as toes", along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Rescue Efforts and Missing Persons
Immediate search and rescue operations were launched, with relief personnel and border guards working tirelessly to locate survivors. While 11 individuals were rescued, a distressing eight people remained missing as rescue efforts continued into the night.
Many of those on board were families visiting from Hanoi, including more than 20 children, which underscored the somber nature of the disaster. An AFP report included an image of relief personnel gathered around the capsized boat, emphasizing the scale of the emergency.
Survivor’s Account of the Ordeal
One of the rescued, a 10-year-old boy, recounted his harrowing escape to state media outlet VietnamNet. He described how he took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived, then swam up, shouting for help until he was pulled to safety by soldiers.
Tran Trong Hung, an office worker in Ha Long Bay, described the sudden onset of the storm, noting that "the sky turned dark at around 2 pm (0700 GMT)", bringing with it an intense weather system.
Wider Weather Impact Across Northern Vietnam
The severe weather extended beyond Ha Long Bay, with torrential rain lashing other northern provinces including Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, and Bac Ninh on the same day. In Hanoi, approximately 175 kilometers away, strong winds toppled several trees.
The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting clarified via VNExpress that these thunderstorms were not linked to Tropical Storm Wipha in the South China Sea. They followed three days of intense heat, with temperatures reaching 37°C in some areas.
Government Response and Investigation
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. He immediately ordered the defense and public security ministries to conduct an urgent search and rescue mission.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister mandated a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and promised strict handling of any violations found, as stated on the government website.
Ha Long Bay’s Vulnerability to Maritime Risks
Ha Long Bay is a cornerstone of Vietnam's tourism industry, drawing millions of visitors annually to its blue-green waters and limestone islands. However, this incident is not isolated.
Just last year, 30 vessels sank in boat lock areas in Quang Ninh province along Ha Long Bay after Typhoon Yagi brought strong winds and waves. This points to a recurring vulnerability to severe weather conditions in the region.
