Horror at Salaga Hospital: Police Probe Missing Newborn as Midwives Detained!

Tension is mounting at the Salaga Municipal Hospital in Ghana's Savannah Region following the reported disappearance of a newborn baby girl shortly after her delivery. The incident has prompted intensive police investigations, staff interrogations, and the arrest of multiple hospital personnel, leaving the baby's family deeply distressed and demanding answers.

According to Balik Majik Ebenezer, brother of the baby's father, Kofi Simon, his sister-in-law, Priscilla, was admitted to the hospital in labor at approximately 3:00 a.m. on a Wednesday. She successfully delivered a baby girl between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. that morning. The mother briefly saw her newborn child immediately after delivery. However, concerns arose when relatives, including the baby's father and grandmother, were repeatedly denied access to see the infant. The family alleges that the child was subsequently taken away and never returned to the mother.

After Priscilla was transferred to the ward without her baby, family members became increasingly worried. When questioned about the child's whereabouts, a nurse on duty reportedly first suggested she believed the mother had taken the baby out for breastfeeding, but later checked and confirmed the child was indeed missing. The distraught family immediately reported the matter to the Salaga Police Station, initiating a formal investigation.

Hospital Administrator, Aloysius Bokuma, confirmed the unprecedented incident, stating that investigations are actively underway to establish the circumstances of the baby's disappearance. He disclosed that management formally reported the incident to the Northern Regional Health Directorate, which dispatched a fact-finding team to Salaga. Bokuma initially declined to comment on the hospital's security arrangements, preferring to await the regional team's comprehensive assessment before releasing further details to the media.

Police have been actively involved, initially interrogating staff members from the two separate shifts on duty at the time of the incident. The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hajia Zuwerah Mohammed Ibrahimah, confirmed on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the arrest of two midwives in connection with the case. These midwives are currently assisting police with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before court. Furthermore, a nurse who was on duty at the time of the disappearance has also been detained. Colleagues of the detained nurse reportedly sought to secure her bail, a move vehemently opposed by the grieving family. Police officers have informed the family that they have blocked possible routes through which the child could have been taken, though no breakthrough has been made.

The family of the missing newborn remains increasingly worried as time passes without any information regarding the baby's whereabouts. They are making fervent appeals to authorities to expedite investigations and intensify efforts to locate the child, unequivocally stating that the detained nurse should not be granted bail until their baby is found. MP Ibrahimah has expressed deep concern, shared in the family's anxiety, and pledged to closely monitor developments, urging the public to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information that could hinder the ongoing probe.
