Homa Bay residents, KUPPET members protest over Albert Ojwang' murder

Demonstrations rocked Oyugis town in Homa Bay County as residents took to the streets on Friday, demanding that all top officers implicated in the murder of Albert Ojwang’ be arrested forthwith.

Angry residents armed with placards thronged the town's major roads, demanding justice for Ojwang and calling for the arrest of officers based at Mawego Police Station, where the deceased was first booked.

"We want justice, and all officers implicated should be behind bars by Monday at the latest," said Steve Loch, an activist in Kasipul.

This comes as Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) teachers from various counties held vigils to push for justice for their slain colleague.

Teachers erupted with placards calling for justice after the brutal killing of Ojwang’, who was a teacher in Voi and a KUPPET member.

In Kisii, KUPPET teachers dressed in their official attire held a peaceful procession in town, running till late in the night with a candlelight vigil, calling for justice.

Today we want to stand in solidarity with the family of our brother Ojwang, who was brutally killed by police officers in a cell," said KUPPET Kisii secretary general Joseph Abincha. 

In Kirinyaga, KUPPET members showed up in large numbers in solidarity with Ojwang’ calling for an immediate end to surging cases of extrajudicial killings in the country.

We are asking President William Ruto to use all the instruments of power to put the police officers in order," said John Mbui, the KUPPET- Kirinyaga Secretary General.

In Kajiado, teachers convened in Isinya town, chanting songs of solidarity. They demanded that the authorities investigate the murder of Albert Ojwang’ thoroughly.

The vigils were also witnessed in Taita Taveta County, the county where Ojwang’ was posted as a teacher at Kituma in Mwatate sub-county, before his untimely demise.

The northern part of the country was not left behind. Teachers from Garissa County turned up to demand justice for their colleague.

Similar vigils were also witnessed in Embu, Kericho, Nyamira, and Migori counties.
