Hollywood Shakes: Paul Thomas Anderson Dominates DGA Awards, Kumail Nanjiani Stirs Controversy

The 78th annual Directors Guild Awards (DGA) event, celebrating outstanding directorial achievements in film and television, took place in Beverly Hills with Oscar and Emmy-nominated comedian Kumail Nanjiani serving as host. Nanjiani delivered a comprehensive and sharply witty 20-minute opening monologue, addressing a room filled with industry heavyweights, including DGA president Christopher Nolan and director Steven Spielberg.

Nanjiani’s monologue touched upon various current Hollywood issues, humorously skewering topics such as the Epstein files, the prevalence of runaway production in cities like Vancouver, Budapest, and Atlanta, and the increasingly extended running times of many films. He also took aim at the historical fact that the guild’s top award was named in honor of director D.W. A native of Karachi, Pakistan, Nanjiani proudly noted that his hosting gig marked a significant first for the DGA Awards. His jokes included comparing the awards night to “Hollywood’s biggest night — Excuse me, Vancouver, Budapest and sometimes Atlanta,” and observing that the room full of directors and their teams looked “like if a movie was just the credits.” He also shared a heartfelt story about the first movie he saw in a theater as a child in Pakistan, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 hit “Jurassic Park,” thanking the director for making an audience on the other side of the world “explode with laughter.” Nanjiani concluded his thoughtful remarks on shared humanity through art with a final, ironic joke about D.W. Griffith.

DGA President Christopher Nolan opened the ceremony and addressed the critical challenges facing Hollywood’s creative community amidst significant industry contraction and consolidation. He highlighted a concerning 40% decline in employment in 2024, followed by another drop in 2025. Nolan emphasized the crucial role of directors in innovating on screen, engaging audiences, and repaying their investment, particularly as new technologies and distribution methods emerge. Nolan himself was the subject of a running joke throughout the night, with presenters and winners quipping about how “President Nolan” sounded much better than
