Hollywood Legend Michael Caine, 92, Ends Retirement for Vin Diesel's Action Sequel

Legendary actor Sir Michael Caine, at 92 years old, is reportedly making a significant return to acting, coming out of retirement to star in a sequel to the 2015 film “The Last Witch Hunter.” This marks a major U-turn from his 2023 announcement of retirement from the screen. The veteran actor is expected to reprise his role as Dolan, a priestly advisor who assists the immortal warrior Kaulder, played by Vin Diesel, who is also confirmed to headline the new feature.
The sequel is being fast-tracked through development by Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company, One Race Films. While a final deal for Caine is pending, his involvement is highly anticipated, reigniting a beloved character from the original adventure film. The first “Last Witch Hunter” was a passion project for Vin Diesel, who promoted it as an adaptation of his own “Dungeons & Dragons” campaigns. Released in October 2015, the film garnered $27 million in North America but saw stronger international success with $119 million from overseas territories. Its surprising second life on digital platforms and home video, including a run as one of Netflix’s most-watched movies, is cited by Lionsgate as the driving force behind the sequel’s development nearly a decade later.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture group, stated that the film has evolved into a global fan favorite, with enduring enthusiasm indicating a clear appetite for more stories set in its unique world. He expressed excitement about reuniting with Vin Diesel and noted how advancements in filmmaking technology would enable an even more ambitious sequel, delivered economically.
Caine’s decision to return to the big screen comes after he had publicly announced his retirement in 2023, at the age of 90. At the time, while promoting his last on-screen performance in Oliver Parker’s “The Great Escaper,” he expressed that he felt he had achieved significant acclaim and that the only roles he was likely to receive were those of elderly men. He famously questioned, “What have I got to do to beat this?” when reflecting on his career and recent successes. His reasoning was that lead roles for actors in their 90s are scarce, typically going to “young handsome boys and girls.”
Sir Michael Caine’s illustrious career spans seven decades, marked by numerous successful films and critical acclaim. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, for “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986) and “The Cider House Rules” (1999). His extensive filmography includes iconic titles such as “Zulu,” “The Italian Job,” and his role as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy. A year after his initial retirement announcement, Caine released a book titled “Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over: My Guide to Life,” in which he hinted at a different perspective on retirement, stating that the answer to whether he would ever retire was “No!” This sequel now confirms his continued passion for acting and his enduring legacy in Hollywood.
