Summer Blockfest is Hoboken’s first-ever hip-hop-focused event: a day-long celebration of hip-hop culture, community pride, creative expression, and local talent. The event connects locals through sound, style, and spirit, standing strong as a bold, cultural movement across Hudson County. The event was even nominated “Best Community Event” by HG readers in its first year, back in 2023.

The celebration kicks off at 12PM on Sunday, August 3rd, at 770 Jackson Street and ends at 7PM. The lineup includes live performances, food trucks, streetwear, custom kicks, art, vinyl, beauty essentials, and local vendors. There is also be a Book Bag Give-Away in collaboration with @pamelabatesfoundation and @kreateakustom, and music is powered by What Hoboken Sounds Like’s own @djbripee, @djdugspin of @getdowndjgroup, @mister_angel of @unfltrdmusic and current owner of @opulenthairloft, to name a few.

While the event is free and open to the public, it is strongly encouraged to RSVP here. The rain date is Saturday, August 9th, 2025.

Behind all the fun is a team of hardworking locals at What Hoboken Sounds Like, a nonprofit organization founded by Victor M. Lopez Jr. that spotlights local music, art, and community voices, especially those often overlooked. Recently, the team expanded its mission by launching a new endeavor called What Jersey City Sounds Like to continue reaching various corners of New Jersey. The goal is to create a regional network of platforms that elevate emerging talent and build civic pride through creativity.

What Hoboken Sounds Like works closely with the community to provide services such as music event production (like the annual Summer Blockfest + The Foodie Fest), artist showcases, youth outreach, small business partnerships, and cultural storytelling. The team’s hard work has not only been praised by locals but also recognized by the City of Hoboken.
