Heavy rain alert in Ranchi, 6 dists: IMD

Ranchi: The Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert for seven districts in Jharkhand for Tuesday, as the districts are likely to experience heavy rainfall."Ranchi, Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Khunti districts located in north-western and central parts of the state would likely receive 7-11cm of rainfall from 8:30am on Tuesday till 8:30am on Wednesday. Thunderstorm and lightning activities, accompanied with gusty wind, speeding up to 40-50 kmph, are also likely to occur at isolated places," the weather bulletin said.Ranchi received 44 mm rainfall on Monday.

The brief spell inundated major parts of the city and put peoples' lives out of gear. Jamshedpur recorded 23.2 mm, Deoghar 16.5 mm, Bokaro 13.5 mm, Latehar 45 mm, Hazaribag 54.5 mm, the highest in the state. Kokar resident Arvind Kumar said, "Whenever it rains, I become afraid of the breakdown of the civic amenities. The city lacks the capacity to endure even a moderate rainfall. Roads become inundated, posing risk to the commuters, especially students."

Monday's rain brought down the maximum temperatures across districts. Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 31.2°C, a 0.7°C drop from normal, while Jamshedpur recorded 33.6°C, 0.9°C below normal, the Met office here said. Daltonganj recorded 31.6°C, a dip of 4°C from normal while Bokaro recorded a 2.6 °C drop.
