Heavy police presence in Ablekuma North as EC sets up for parliamentary rerun
Security has been tightened in the Ablekuma North Constituency as Electoral Commission (EC) officials prepare for the parliamentary election rerun in 19 polling stations today, Friday, July 11, 2025.
A visibly heavy police presence has been observed across key locations within the constituency, particularly around former hotspots, as voters return to the polls in selected areas to decide between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn.
Citi News checks this morning indicate that the police deployment at some voting areas—especially near previous flashpoints—is significantly higher than at other polling stations.
One such location is the St. Peter Society Methodist Church, which served as the collation center during the 2024 parliamentary elections. That process ended in chaos, with property reportedly damaged during the melee. In this polls, EC officials say the church has refused access to its auditorium, citing the destruction of property and disruption caused during the previous collation.
In response to heightened public concern over security, Minister for Defence Dr. Omane Boamah assured Ghanaians earlier that for the rerun. He emphasized that the Ghana Police Service would be solely responsible for ensuring a peaceful and democratic exercise.
“There will be no military deployment,” Dr. Boamah reiterated. “The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job.”
The Ablekuma North seat has remained vacant since the December 7, 2024, election, following a legal challenge and subsequent annulment of results from 19 polling stations. Today’s rerun is expected to bring closure to the months-long dispute and restore parliamentary representation for the area.
Both leading candidates have expressed confidence going into the rerun, and voter turnout is expected to be closely monitored throughout the day.
