Heartbreak on the Pitch: Kenya Lionesses Fall to Argentina in Thrilling Rugby Clash

The Kenya Lionesses faced a challenging Sunday morning at the 2026 Nairobi HSBC SVNS Division Two tournament, suffering a 5-0 defeat to Argentina at Nyayo Stadium. This marked their third loss in the ongoing competition, held in front of their home fans who cheered on both the Lionesses and Shujaa.
The match against Argentina began with an immediate setback for the Lionesses. Grace Adhiambo's opening kick-off was ruled offside, ceding possession to the South American side. Argentina capitalized swiftly on this advantage, with Marianela Escalante scoring an early unconverted try to put her team ahead 5-0. Despite trailing, the Lionesses displayed significant physicality and defensive prowess over the subsequent five minutes, executing powerful blocks and tackles that successfully prevented Argentina from breaching the Kenyan 22-meter line further. However, despite winning possession multiple times and pushing play three minutes past the hooter, the Lionesses were unable to convert their efforts into points due to poor ball handling and movement, leaving the score at 5-0 in Argentina's favour at the break.
In the second half, the Kenya Lionesses secured the Argentine restart. A series of swift passes created an opportunity for Edith Nariaka, who broke through the defensive line with a promising run. Unfortunately, she was chased down before reaching the try line and subsequently lost the ball, squandering a potential scoring chance. The remainder of the half saw both teams exchanging possession without either side managing to achieve a breakthrough. Argentina maintained their narrow 5-0 lead until the final whistle, securing their fourth victory in the Nairobi leg of the tournament.
The 2026 HSBC SVNS Division Two tournament operates on a round-robin format. The top four teams emerging from the combined legs in Nairobi, Montevideo, Uruguay (scheduled for March 21–22), and São Paulo, Brazil (March 28–29), will earn qualification for the SVNS World Championship. There, they will compete against Division One’s top eight sides for a coveted spot in the 2027 season.
Prior to their Sunday morning encounter with Argentina, the Kenya Lionesses had a mixed performance on Saturday, having secured their only victory against Brazil but suffering defeats to both China and South Africa. The team continues to vie for a strong finish in the tournament, with the ultimate goal of advancing towards the SVNS World Championship.
