Hardy's Back! Tom Hardy Confirmed to Return for 'MobLand' Season 3, Dismissing Exit Rumors!

Reports of actor Tom Hardy being forcibly removed from his starring and producing role in the Paramount+ series "MobLand" proved to be premature rumors, as Variety has confirmed that he was not fired and discussions are actively underway to find a creative path for his character, Harry Da Souza, to return for Season 3. A source close to production stated, "Tom was not fired, the door is not closed for Season 3 and things are being worked through creatively."
The controversy stems from real tensions between Hardy, co-creator Jez Butterworth, and producer David Glasser. Multiple sources have attributed the fallout to a combination of factors, including Hardy's reported tardiness on set and his insistence on re-writing parts of the script. Conversely, insiders also pointed fault towards Butterworth, who was reportedly delivering scripts late, sometimes just a week before shooting, which hindered Hardy's ability to prepare. Butterworth was also often absent from the set, making it difficult to address script issues as they arose, especially when executive producer Guy Ritchie was not directing.
Guy Ritchie, who executive produces and has directed multiple episodes, is believed to be a key figure in resolving the situation, with a production source noting, "I’m sure Guy is probably pushing David Glasser to make it work. Guy likes working with Tom." Their longstanding professional relationship, dating back to Ritchie’s 2008 film “RocknRolla,” means Ritchie can manage Hardy effectively, even telling him directly to "stop messing around," which Hardy reportedly takes "in good heart." This dynamic contrasts with Hardy's relationship with other "jobbing TV directors" who might be intimidated by his reputation and struggle to manage his requests for script changes.
The impact of the delays and tensions extended to other cast members, including Pierce Brosnan (who plays Conrad Harrigan) and Helen Mirren (Maeve Harrigan), who were allegedly left waiting on set when Hardy was late. While frustration was evident, sources close to the production dismissed claims of any major personal or political fallout between Mirren and Hardy, suggesting that any interaction was limited to Mirren politely urging him to "get on with it." David Glasser, described as a "tough guy" who runs a "tight ship," was reportedly unwilling to be "held to ransom by an actor," even a leading one like Hardy, and grew impatient with the script change requests and tardiness.
Butterworth's absence from set was particularly problematic due to his busy schedule, as he is also involved with another Paramount+ show, "The Agency," and Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopics, leading sources to suggest he is "spread too thin." While Hardy's ideas for script changes were often deemed "very sound," Butterworth's unavailability meant these notes were not addressed promptly, causing further friction. Hardy, who is known for being "tricky" and having a reputation for being "difficult" (as seen in past projects like "Mad Max" and "Star Trek: Nemesis"), reportedly needs time in the mornings to "find his approach" to a scene, which doesn't always align with the production schedule.
Despite the challenges, the consensus among sources is that Hardy's role is integral to the show's success, and recasting is highly unlikely. While the show could theoretically continue without him, it would likely result in a significant loss of viewers. With both Guy Ritchie and Paramount+ reportedly "rooting for a truce" and largely observing the situation from the sidelines, efforts are focused on patching things up between Hardy, Glasser, and Butterworth, especially since Hardy was already hesitant about returning for Season 3 given the ongoing conflicts. The future of Harry Da Souza in "MobLand" remains uncertain but hopeful.
