'Happy Gilmore 2' Trailer Released; Adam Sandler Returns, Features Bad Bunny, Becky Lynch

Golf fans and comedy lovers rejoice: Adam Sandler is officially returning as the beloved, unconventional golfer in "Happy Gilmore 2," the highly anticipated sequel to the 1996 cult classic. The film is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix worldwide on July 25, 2025, bringing Happy back to screens nearly 30 years after his original Tour Championship victory.

The sequel was first teased, and its first full trailer unveiled, during the Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event on Saturday, May 31. This new trailer offered fans a significant sneak peek at the upcoming film, promising a return to the comedic mayhem that made the original a hit. According to reports, the trailer is packed with funny jokes and numerous references to the first movie.

"Happy Gilmore 2" picks up the story almost three decades later. Adam Sandler described his character's return on the "New Heights" podcast, stating, "The movie itself picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he's different — he's a bit of a mess. And then we try to get his life cooking again." Happy Gilmore is reportedly embarking on a comeback tour, complete with a new caddy and a scruffier beard. Actor Christopher McDonald also hinted that the film explores themes of "family and friends and love and basically a lot of heart."

The film is directed by Kyle Newacheck, known for his work on comedies like "Game Over, Man!" and "Murder Mystery," as well as episodes of "Workaholics" and "What We Do in the Shadows." The screenplay is co-written by Tim Herlihy, who also co-wrote the original, and Adam Sandler himself. Sandler also takes on a producer role, alongside Jack Giarraputo, Tim Herlihy, and Robert Simonds.

Several original cast members are returning to reprise their iconic roles. Besides Sandler as Happy Gilmore, Christopher McDonald returns as Happy's arrogant rival, Shooter McGavin. Julie Bowen will also be back as Happy's love interest, Virginia. Ben Stiller, who had a memorable role in the original, is also confirmed to return, along with Blake Clark.

The sequel boasts a star-studded lineup of new faces joining the comedic fairway. Global music superstar Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) has a significant role as Happy's new caddy. The world of professional wrestling is also well-represented, with AEW's Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) and WWE's Becky Lynch making appearances. NFL star Travis Kelce is another prominent addition to the cast.

Further expanding the ensemble, the cast includes Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Nick Swardson, and veteran comedic actor John Daly. A number of professional golf personalities are also slated to appear, including Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Paige Spiranac. Adam Sandler's daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler, along with Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, and Philip Fine Schneider, round out the extensive cast list.

The trailer provided glimpses of these new additions in action. MJF, who reportedly plays one of Happy's children, is featured heavily, with scenes showing him delivering an elbow drop on a car, presenting Happy with a boppable dummy, and celebrating a graduation. Becky Lynch appears in a comedic moment, laughing at Happy, and is seen alongside WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella. Bad Bunny's role as the caddy was also showcased, and he was introduced in a special hype package at the Tudum event, which also featured the Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena, appearing as himself.

Returning cast member Christopher McDonald shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating he was "over the moon to be asked to be in" the sequel and has been an "ambassador for this movie for so long." While he couldn't reveal plot details due to an NDA, he praised Adam Sandler and Netflix, saying, "They've outdone themselves." He emphasized the film's emotional core, describing it as being "about family and friends and love and basically a lot of heart."

Becky Lynch also reflected on her experience working on the film, calling it "surreal" to be part of the sequel to a movie she loved growing up. Speaking to Sports Illustrated, she praised Adam Sandler extensively: "Actually, working with him made me love him even more. Seeing how passionate, hilarious, and completely dialed in he is, and how he creates such a fun, warm working environment — it’s incredible. He keeps things loose, but laser-focused at the same time.”

With its blend of returning favorites, exciting new talent, and the promise of Adam Sandler's signature comedic style, "Happy Gilmore 2" is poised to be a major streaming event in the summer of 2025. Fans old and new are eagerly anticipating Happy's return to the green for another round of laughs and unconventional golfing prowess.
