Guy Ritchie Conjures a New 'Sherlock Holmes' Series for Prime Video

The legendary tale of Sherlock Holmes, first penned by Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 1800s, has been reimagined in numerous ways across various mediums. Joining this expansive collection of Sherlock Holmes content is Prime Video’s upcoming series, “Young Sherlock,” which draws inspiration from Andrew Lane’s book series. Prime Video recently unveiled a first look at the Hero Fiennes Tiffin-led project, which is slated to arrive exclusively on the platform in 2026.
Directed by the fan-favorite helmer Guy Ritchie, the series promises a fresh take on the iconic detective's origin story. Ritchie previously explored the “Sherlock Holmes” universe by directing the 2009 film “Sherlock Holmes” and its 2011 sequel “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” both starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. “Young Sherlock” marks Ritchie’s first official return to the legendary detective in over a decade, with his unmistakable cinematic style expected to define the period thriller.
The images released provide an intriguing first glimpse into the period drama’s setting, featuring characters impeccably dressed in 1870s suits and dresses. The series centers on a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), who is struggling to navigate his higher education at Oxford University due to his natural inclination to challenge authority. His journey through academia takes an unexpected turn when a murder occurs on campus, presenting Holmes with an opportunity to prove his burgeoning deductive skills and unravel his first major mystery. This youthful and unfiltered Holmes will embark on a globe-trotting adventure as an amateur investigator.
The series will also explore the boyhood friendship between the young sleuth and his future arch-nemesis, James Moriarty, portrayed by Dónal Finn. Several shots capture them studying side-by-side at Oxford, hinting at the complex relationship that will develop between them. The cast is a robust ensemble, featuring Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge and introducing Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, who appears to be a key addition to Holmes and Moriarty’s quest for truth. Other notable cast members include Natascha McElhone, Joseph Fiennes, Numan Acar, Ravi Aujla, Max Irons, Simon Delaney, Ian Midlane, Adam James, and Rachel Shelley.
“Young Sherlock” is executive produced by Guy Ritchie, Matthew Parkhill (who also serves as showrunner), Dhana Gilbert, Marc Resteghini, Simon Maxwell, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Kelton, and Colin Wilson. Harriet Creelman and Steve Thompson are co-executive producers, with Motive Pictures leading the physical production for the series. This forthcoming show aims to deliver a comprehensive origin story, showcasing the detective long before he became the most celebrated investigator in England, tackling his initial challenges and mysteries in a period setting.
