Gunshots and Politics: Bitou Deputy Mayor Under Fire, ANC Demands Arrest!

Police in the Western Cape are currently investigating a case of pointing a firearm following the widespread circulation of videos on social media. These videos allegedly depict Nokuzola Kolwapi, the Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality and leader of the Ikhwezi People’s Movement (IPM), discharging a gun in public during a cultural celebration in KwaNokuthula, Plettenberg Bay.
The incident reportedly occurred during her son’s Umgidi ceremony, a celebration to welcome initiates back into the community. Footage shows Kolwapi firing several shots into the air amidst ongoing festivities, attended by various community members, including children. Western Cape police spokesperson Chris Spies confirmed that officers from the KwaNokuthula police station visited the premises after the videos began circulating online. Spies stated that the investigation is in its early stages and no arrests have been made as of yet.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has strongly condemned Kolwapi’s actions and formally called for her arrest. Sifiso Mtsweni, ANC Western Cape spokesperson, described the incident as reckless and unacceptable, emphasizing the party’s demand for decisive consequences and distancing themselves from Kolwapi’s conduct.
In response to the growing backlash, Kolwapi has denied using a real firearm. She issued a statement claiming the object seen in the video was a replica toy gun, utilized symbolically during her son’s Ulwaluko ceremony. Kolwapi further argued that the public outcry reflects deeper societal discussions concerning culture, power, and gender, suggesting her actions should be interpreted within a cultural framework.
The Bitou Municipality has acknowledged awareness of the circulating videos and confirmed that the matter is under police investigation. In a statement issued on December 22, 2025, the municipality clarified that the Umgidi ceremony was a private family event and that Kolwapi attended in her personal capacity. The Ikhwezi Political Movement, which governs Bitou Municipality in a coalition with the Democratic Alliance, has also acknowledged the incident and indicated that a statement would be released.
