GTCO Autism Conference to advance spectrum inclusion

Published 6 hours ago2 minute read

Every autistic child should be understood not judged – difference based on the neuro divergent condition known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) should not be feared but embraced.

This is the peg of Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO PLC) Autism Conference initiative, which began in 2019 to advocate for children with the spectrum and support the families and caregivers who nurture them.

According to GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Segun Agbaje, the autism programme’s foundation is built on championing acceptance of the neurodevelopmental disorders, encouraging early intervention, and advocating for a future where every child is given the opportunity to thrive.

“This year, as we mark our 15th year milestone, we turn our focus on the theme: ‘From Awareness to Action: 15 Years Of Advancing Autism Inclusion’ to reaffirm our commitment; a reminder that inclusion and acceptance is a responsibility which is not only measured by policies and programmes but by the everyday opportunities we create for every child and every individual. The focus is to ensure that individuals on the autism spectrum are not just supported, but empowered, included and celebrated.”

Speaking, the Chief Communication Officer GTCO PLC, Oyinade Adegite, said this edition, which holds from July 15 to 16 at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos “will advance inclusion for children and adults living with autism spectrum disorder. Before now the spectrum used to be a stigma and parents hide their wards who have the spectrum but now the words are out. However, action is needed by policy makers and at GTCO we are at the forefront of tackling the issues around autism spectrum disorder in Africa beyond Nigeria. We have been doing this for 15-years and we are pushing harder without relenting. We have had over 5000 families attending the clinic.”
