GTBank to Increase SMS Transaction Alert Fee from ₦4 to ₦6

Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has announced a 50% increase in its SMS transaction alert fee, raising the charge from ₦4 to ₦6 per message. The new fee will take effect from Thursday, May 1, 2025.

According to a statement released by the bank, the fee adjustment is due to an increase in telecom rates as communicated by telecommunication service providers.

“This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates,” GTBank said in a customer notification. The bank futher emphasized on the importance of SMS transaction alerts in helping customers monitor account activities and stay in control of their finances.

The increase reflects wider changes in Nigeria’s telecom sector. Telecom operators like MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile recently got approval for a 50% tariff hike. They had requested this due to rising energy costs, a weaker naira, and frequent cable disruptions.

As a result, SMS charges have risen from ₦4 to ₦6 per message. Data plans have also become more expensive.

GTBank advised customers who prefer not to receive transaction alerts via SMS to update their preferences. This can be done by completing the transaction alert form available on the bank’s website and sending it to [email protected]. For further inquiries or support, customers can contact the GTConnect helpline via +234-2014480000.
