Governor Lawal Unleashes Sweeping Reforms: Zamfara Rehires Workers, Boosts Tech, Feeds Vulnerable

Governor Dauda Lawal's administration in Zamfara State is actively implementing a wide range of reforms and initiatives aimed at human capital development, digital transformation, humanitarian support, enhanced security, and improved local governance. These efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to address critical challenges and foster sustainable development across the state.

In a significant move to revitalise the education sector, Governor Lawal has approved the recruitment of 3,050 qualified teachers into Zamfara State’s basic education system. Prof. Nasir Anka Garba, Executive Chairman of the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (ZSUBEB), announced that this intervention is designed to address the shortage of qualified teachers, improve the teacher-pupil ratio, enhance the quality of teaching and learning, expand access to basic education in underserved communities, and strengthen the overall capacity of the basic education sub-sector. The recruitment process is assured to be transparent and merit-based, with application details to be communicated through official channels.

Furthering its commitment to human capital development and digital advancement, Governor Lawal has signed into law the bill establishing the Zamfara Institute of Information Technology (ZIIT). Dr. Habib Gajam, Executive Secretary of the Zamfara Information Technology Development Agency (ZITDA), hailed this as a historic milestone for technology and innovation. The ZIIT is poised to serve as a hub for developing highly skilled professionals in critical fields such as software development, cybersecurity, data science, and artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to build a knowledge-driven economy, empower young people with cutting-edge digital skills, and position Zamfara as a leading technology and innovation hub in Northern Nigeria, contributing to the broader Nigerian digital landscape.

Complementing these developmental efforts, the Zamfara State First Lady, Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has launched the 2026 Ramadan food distribution programme, targeting 50,000 vulnerable beneficiaries across all 147 wards of the state. The initiative, flagged off in Shinkafi Local Government Area, aims to sustain humanitarian support and ease economic hardship during the holy month. To ensure transparency and accountability, ward-level distribution committees have been inaugurated, tasked with upholding integrity and fairness to ensure items reach the intended beneficiaries. Each package includes 20kg of rice, 5kg each of beans, sugar, millet, and maize, as well as salt, vegetable oil, spaghetti, and wrappers for women. The First Lady expressed appreciation for Governor Lawal's support and reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to the welfare of the less privileged.

Addressing the pressing issue of security, Governor Dauda Lawal recently convened an emergency meeting of the state security council in Gusau. The meeting was prompted by alarming recent security developments, including credible reports of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) being placed along certain highways, alongside ongoing bandit attacks. Governor Lawal tasked the heads of security agencies to urgently review the current security architecture and develop a practical, well-designed, and clear operational framework to counteract these threats. He urged heightened vigilance, strengthened intelligence, and immediate, coordinated countermeasures to prevent these elements from gaining further ground and to decisively neutralise the threat. Governor Lawal also commiserated with security agencies for the loss of brave personnel and those injured in the line of duty, and extended his sympathies to the communities and families affected by the attacks, assuring them of his administration’s logistical, operational, and institutional backing to improve security effectiveness.

In matters of local governance and civil service welfare, Governor Lawal has also approved the reinstatement and immediate payment of salaries to 650 verified staff across various local government areas. This decision followed a comprehensive verification exercise conducted by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as disclosed by Commissioner Engr. Ahmad Garba Yandi. The exercise aimed to ensure transparency, accountability, and due process in local government personnel matters, confirming the genuine employment status and eligibility of the affected staff. This move aligns with the governor’s commitment to fairness, justice, and the welfare of civil servants, strengthening the local government system and boosting morale among workers at the grassroots level. The administration prioritises prompt salary payments and continues to implement reforms to sanitise the system, eliminate irregularities, and ensure efficient management of public resources while safeguarding the legitimate rights of its workforce.
