Google Unveils New AI Tools and Gemini Upgrades at I/O 2025
Google has recently launched a multitude of new AI products and updates, making it challenging to keep track of them all. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, announced over two dozen new AI updates at the I/O developer conference. While impressive, the sheer number of new products has led to overlap and potential confusion. This approach may put Google at a disadvantage against more focused competitors in the race to create an "everything app." Attending Google's I/O developer conference can feel overwhelming due to the constant stream of new AI announcements.
During the keynote event, at least two dozen new models, features, and updates were unveiled. While the rapid pace of launches is impressive, it can also seem disorganized. Several launches appear to overlap, such as AI Mode, which allows users to chat with Google while browsing, and Gemini in Chrome, which also enables users to ask questions while browsing. Similarly, Gemini Live lets users interact with the AI assistant via their phone's camera, while Search Live offers a similar chat-based experience for whatever the phone sees. Project Mariner, an experimental AI agent, can perform actions like booking tickets, while Gemini's Agent Mode also has agentic capabilities, such as helping users find real estate listings.
Google also launched an AI filmmaking tool called Flow, powered by the new Veo 3 model, and touted updates to the Gemma AI model family, which can help decipher dolphin communication (DolphinGemma). The rapid pace of these launches has been described as "intense." Google's approach may complicate its vision of building a single, universal AI assistant (Project Astra). Competitors like OpenAI are also pursuing this goal, potentially launching a dedicated device to run it. Google risks spreading itself too thin with overlapping AI products, making it difficult to compete with a more focused, standalone solution.
Google is trying to disrupt its traditional search business with the introduction of AI Mode in its search engine. This tool functions like a chatbot, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and receive comprehensive answers from Google's AI system. Sundar Pichai described it as a "total reimagining of search," noting that it has dramatically changed how people interact with search in tests. Along with AI Mode, Google is introducing more personalized and automated email replies and a shopping tool that automatically purchases clothing when it goes on sale.
Google has been hesitant to fully embrace AI due to the potential impact on its search business, which generated nearly $200 billion last year. While AI systems offer technical advancements, they are prone to providing incorrect answers. There are indications that AI may already be affecting Google's popularity as the default for finding digital information. An Apple executive, Eddy Cue, mentioned that Google search traffic declined for the first time in 22 years because more people are using AI. Google has stated that it continues to "see overall query growth" in search.
Google unveiled ’Stitch,’ a new AI-powered tool designed to bridge the gap between design and development of app creation. Stitch aims to transform how user interfaces (UIs) are conceptualized and built, making app design more accessible and efficient. Stitch allows users to generate HTML and CSS markup for app designs using simple prompts, choose between Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash AI models for interface ideation, export designs directly to Figma or refine code in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), and fine-tune UI elements with customization options for themes, fonts, and layouts.
Google has also announced the expansion of its AI features in Search, introducing several new capabilities designed to provide users with more advanced and tailored search results in the United States. AI Overviews has led to a noticeable increase in more complex and multimodal queries. In its largest markets, such as the United States and India, the adoption of AI Overviews has led to double-digit growth in usage for query types supported by this feature. Google is introducing AI Mode in Search, which will be available nationwide in the United States without the need for sign-up. AI Mode utilizes a technique known as query fan-out, which breaks down user questions into subtopics and issues multiple queries at once.
Google is deploying a custom version of its Gemini 2.5 language model for both AI Mode and AI Overviews. One of the enhancements is Deep Search, designed for more comprehensive research. Google is also introducing live capabilities that build upon the existing Google Lens functionality with Search Live. AI Mode will soon feature agentic capabilities from Project Mariner, enabling the automation of tasks such as finding and purchasing tickets. AI Mode's new shopping experience brings together Gemini model capabilities with Google’s Shopping Graph. Users will also have access to a new agentic checkout feature to manage purchases through Google Pay. AI Mode will soon offer suggestions based on past searches and, with user consent, draw on information from other Google apps such as Gmail. AI Mode will be able to analyse datasets and provide custom charts for queries in areas such as sports and finance.
Google's I/O 2025 delivered on expectations with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Google is intent on morphing Gemini into a "universal AI assistant." Key to this will be AI’s ability to use world knowledge, reasoning, and simulate natural environments. Google is rolling out significant upgrades for the Gemini 2.5 Flash and Gemini 2.5 Pro models. Google’s newest generative media models, the video generation model Veo 3 and the image generation model Imagen 4, find new capabilities. Google is introducing two new AI subscription plans: Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. Google Beam, uses an AI volumetric video model to make calls appear fully 3D from any perspective.
Android 16 will introduce the biggest visual changes to Android in more than four years. Gemini AI will now find a home in Wear OS smartwatches, Google TV based smart TVs, and in car with Android Auto. Android phones will add scam detection in Google Messages as well as in-call scam protection. Google is also integrating a Key Verifier, which will verify the identity of the other party through public encryption keys. An Android update for existing phones will further reinforce Factory Reset protections. Proton is announcing a fairly significant update for its Proton Drive app, making it a viable alternative to Google Photos and Google Drive.
Google has unveiled updates to its developer products, aimed at improving the process of building artificial intelligence applications. Mat Velloso stated, "We believe developers are the architects of the future." The company introduced an enhanced version of its Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview, delivering improved performance on coding and complex reasoning tasks. New models announced include Gemma 3n, designed to function efficiently on personal devices, and Gemini Diffusion, a text model that generates outputs at five times the speed of Google's previous fastest model. The Lyria RealTime model, an experimental interactive music generation tool, was also detailed. Several additional variants of the Gemma model family were announced, targeting specific use cases, such as MedGemma and SignGemma.
Google outlined new features intended to facilitate the development of AI applications. A more agentic version of Colab will enable users to instruct the tool in plain language, while Gemini Code Assist is now generally available to all developers. Firebase Studio was presented as a new cloud-based workspace supporting rapid development of AI applications. Jules, an asynchronous coding agent, is now generally available. Stitch was also announced, designed to generate frontend code and user interface designs from natural language descriptions or image prompts. Updates to Google AI Studio include native integration with Gemini 2.5 Pro and optimised use with the GenAI SDK.
Google I/O 2025 showcased how deeply AI is being infused into every click, tap, and scroll. AI Mode in Google Search is now rolling out across the U.S., and users can get early access via Labs. Deep Search in Labs is being introduced for users who want more in-depth, research-backed answers. “Search Live” powered by Project Astra is coming soon. Project Mariner is adding agent-like abilities. AI-powered shopping gets an upgrade. AI Overviews now serve 1.5 billion monthly users globally. Gemini 2.5 is now powering both AI Mode and AI Overviews in the U.S. Gemini now creates practice quizzes on demand. Gemini Live is becoming more personal with integrations across Google Maps, Calendar, Tasks, and Keep. Google AI Ultra includes premium models, 30TB storage, and YouTube Premium for $249.99/month. A 50% off launch offer sweetens the deal for new Ultra users. College students in select countries get free Gemini upgrades for a year.
