Google Transforms Shopping: Conversational AI, Agentic Checkout & AI Callers

Google is introducing a comprehensive suite of artificial intelligence-powered shopping enhancements just in time for the upcoming holiday season. The technology giant recently unveiled an array of new tools designed to transform the online shopping experience, including conversational shopping capabilities within Google Search, advanced features integrated into its Gemini app, an innovative agentic checkout system, and even an AI tool capable of autonomously contacting local retailers to ascertain product availability. Google's vice president and general manager of ads and commerce, Vidhya Srinivasan, highlighted in a pre-launch briefing that these additions aim to alleviate the often-tedious aspects of online shopping, making it feel more intuitive and natural. The company's vision is to preserve the enjoyable elements of shopping, such as browsing and serendipitous discovery, while eliminating the cumbersome, hard parts.
One significant update enables consumers to engage in conversational shopping through AI Mode, Google’s interactive search feature that supports natural language queries in a chatbot-like interface. This mode generates responses specifically tailored to the user's questions, providing visual inspiration with images, alongside critical details like pricing, product reviews, and real-time inventory information. For instance, a query for "cozy sweaters in autumn colors" would yield visual examples of available options, while a comparison request for skincare products might present insights in a structured comparison table. Google confirmed that AI Mode is powered by its extensive Shopping Graph, which encompasses over 50 billion product listings, with a staggering 2 billion updates occurring hourly, ensuring that the inventory information displayed is largely current. While these features are still experimental, AI Mode in Search will incorporate sponsored listings.
Further enhancing its AI capabilities, the Gemini app will now offer more elaborate and fleshed-out ideas as responses to shopping-related inquiries, moving beyond simple text suggestions. This particular enhancement is currently accessible exclusively to users in the United States. It's important to note that, unlike AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini mobile app will not yet display sponsored ads due to the experimental nature of these features.
A groundbreaking addition is the rollout of agentic checkout within Google Search across the U.S., including its integration into AI Mode. This feature is presently compatible with major merchants such as Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and a selection of Shopify stores. The process begins with users tracking an item's price to receive notifications when it drops within their specified budget. Subsequently, users can opt to have Google complete the purchase on their behalf directly on the merchant's website, leveraging Google Pay. The company assures users that it will always seek explicit permission before any purchase and require confirmation of both purchase and shipping details. Lilian Rincon, VP of product management for Google Shopping, explained that this feature benefits shoppers by eliminating the need for constant price checks and aids retailers by re-engaging customers who might otherwise move on. She emphasized that agentic checkout is built upon Google’s trusted Shopping Graph and G Pay infrastructure, guaranteeing accurate results and secure payment processing.
Another innovative AI feature empowers Google to make calls to businesses on a user's behalf to ascertain if a store stocks a specific product, its cost, and any ongoing promotions. This capability is underpinned by Google’s long-standing Duplex technology, initially introduced in 2018, combined with its robust Shopping Graph and payment infrastructure. After a user provides details about the desired product, the AI initiates calls to local stores, gathers the necessary information, and then presents a concise summary of its findings to the user. This feature is currently rolling out in the U.S. for specific product categories, including toys, health and beauty products, and electronics. To utilize this, users can search for "products near me" and then select the "Let Google Call" option, allowing the AI to guide them through the inquiry process.
Google is diligently considering the merchant experience with these AI-driven calls, ensuring that the chatbot does not call excessively and that its questions are clear and direct. Retailers retain the option to opt out of receiving such calls. For those who do not opt out, Google's AI will always begin by disclosing that it is an artificial intelligence calling on behalf of a customer and will only proceed with the inquiry once the call recipient grants permission. While Google executives had planned to demonstrate this technology during a recent press briefing, technical issues with Wi-Fi connectivity prevented the completion of the demo.
