Google Supercharges African AI: Five Startups Join Elite Accelerator Program

Google has announced the selection of 20 startups for its latest Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI cohort, with five of these organizations making a significant impact across Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative aims to harness generative artificial intelligence to tackle pressing societal challenges such as crisis response, antimicrobial resistance, and children’s mental health. The selected entities, which include nonprofits, social enterprises, civic organizations, and universities, were chosen through an open call for applications.
Each participant in the accelerator will receive a share of a $30 million fund, along with six months of intensive technical training, pro bono support from Google’s leading AI experts, and access to Cloud credits. Google.org established the Generative AI Accelerator in 2024 to extend the benefits of AI to the social sector, providing crucial funding and technical expertise to nonprofits. Previous participants, like Tabiya, an organization focused on youth unemployment, have already attested to the program's effectiveness, reporting significant benefits seven months post-graduation. Tabiya, for instance, utilized Google Cloud tools such as Vertex AI to develop Compass, an open-source, generative AI-powered conversational agent designed to help job seekers, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This innovation has enabled Tabiya to reach over 8,000 job seekers in half the time and at a quarter of the cost, aiming to increase the reach of human career counselors by 100%.
Among the five notable startups selected from Sub-Saharan Africa are:
Darsel (Nigeria): This organization offers a supplemental tool for K12 school systems with curriculum-aligned content. Darsel’s personalized learning algorithm adapts to students’ levels, providing hints and explanations in an engaging, gamified manner to address learning gaps. In partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Darsel is working to improve math learning rates for over 15,000 Grade 9 students in Nigeria, delivering 5 million personalized answers through its gen AI-powered tutor.
Signvrse (Kenya): Signvrse is dedicated to creating real-time, offline sign language avatars to overcome communication challenges and address the shortage of interpreters for millions of deaf individuals across Africa. By leveraging AI, the startup enables instant sign language interpretation using 3D avatars and provides API integration tools for websites and apps to support deaf users and enhance accessibility.
Aga Khan University (Kenya): Addressing Kenya’s severe doctor shortage, Aga Khan University provides doctors with real-time, evidence-based clinical guidance in both English and Swahili. This initiative aims to enhance diagnostic accuracy, improve treatment decisions, and ensure adherence to local guidelines. The university emphasizes the advantages of data in low-income communities, facilitating the daily use of powerful analytics to shorten the path from data to insight and inspire breakthroughs.
3iS (Nigeria & Ethiopia): 3iS focuses on strengthening crisis response capabilities by providing real-time insights. These insights enhance risk management skills, drive anticipatory action, and support efficient resource allocation for hundreds of thousands of people in Nigeria and Ethiopia. The startup utilizes data and cutting-edge technology to generate knowledge, empowering leaders and change agents in the humanitarian, development, and academic sectors.
CETA Global (Zambia & South Africa): In collaboration with partners in Zambia and South Africa, CETA Global addresses critical care shortages by equipping thousands of mental health providers globally. They provide standardized, evidence-based, and cost-effective training through a simulation platform that offers realistic role-play scenarios and personalized feedback. CETA Global streamlines workforce challenges with its groundbreaking software and training system, administering high-quality, cost-effective, transdiagnostic, and evidence-based solutions.
These initiatives underscore Google.org’s commitment to advancing the social sector through AI, fostering confidence among nonprofits in achieving their missions, and significantly impacting communities worldwide.
