Global TV Heats Up: Mipcom Showcase Reveals Blockbuster Deals and International Dramas
The global television market is buzzing with Spanish and Brazilian productions, showcasing a diverse range of dramas, thrillers, and innovative formats. Globo achieves a milestone BBC deal for "Blood Red – Under the Moonlight" while Spanish studios present high-profile series and adaptations, cementing their strong international presence.
The global television content market, particularly at events like Mipcom 2026, is showcasing a vibrant array of new and adapted series from Spain and Brazil, underscoring their growing international reach and production prowess. Both nations are presenting diverse projects, from high-concept dramas and thrillers to innovative dating formats and preschool content, demonstrating a strategic focus on captivating global audiences.
Spain's television landscape is particularly rich with new narratives. Buendía Estudios Canarias and Atresmedia are behind "Adrift," a drama about five presumed-dead fishermen returning, led by Paula Echevarría, and "Hidden Brushstrokes," a domestic noir exploring a marriage built on lies, starring Toni Acosta and Rodolfo Sancho. Secuoya Studios is making waves with "The Butterfly Labyrinth," an espionage thriller starring Can Yaman, shot entirely in Spain and in Spanish, and "Caldas," a crime series for Disney+ based on Domingo Villar’s bestseller "The Last Boat," featuring Javier Gutiérrez and Hovik Keuchkerian.
Movistar Plus is a significant player, presenting "The Castle," a series about a police unit tackling a prostitution kingpin, which was a hit at San Sebastián. They also bring the second season of "Celeste," a Series Mania winner, and "Many People Need to Die," their most-watched series of 2026, known for its scathing realism of Millennial angst. Other notable Spanish productions include "The Big Date" from Incís TV and 3Cat, a Catalan dating format testing AI for perfect matches, which BBC Studios has already acquired adaptation rights for. Kraken’s "Bumpy, the Bear" is a multi-platform preschool IP spanning 52 shorts and music videos in multiple languages. From RTVE and Movistar Plus, "Rocío" is a bio-series charting music legend Rocío Jurado’s rise. Mediaset España contributes "Marusía: Naval Academy," a mystery-laden coming-of-age drama, and "She, Damned Soul," a forbidden romance adaptation.
Brazilian media giant Globo is equally assertive in the international market, highlighting significant content deals and strategic partnerships at Mipcom 2026. A major announcement is the sale of "Blood Red – Under the Moonlight," a teen werewolf/vampire love triangle thriller from Globoplay Original, to BBC iPlayer and BBC Three. This marks a significant milestone, being the first Globoplay Original licensed to the BBC, signaling its global appeal. Created by Claudia Sardinha and Rosane Swartman, the fantasy-adventure-thriller showcases Brazil's stunning landscapes and lore, such as its maned wolves.
Globo's showcase also underscores the power of its "Super Drama" productions from its massive Estúdios Globo Rio complex. These include "Anything Goes," a fast-paced remake of a 1980s telenovela hit that achieved a 56% audience share, "Three Graces," a megahit teen pregnancy drama, and "To Love Is to Care," a melodrama combining love and whodunnit elements with advanced production techniques like LED walls and artificial lakes. Angela Colla, from Globo, emphasizes that successful stories resonate deeply by focusing on strong characters, emotional investment, authentic journeys, contemporary tensions, and real moral dilemmas, rather than just loud plots.
Globo's commitment to social impact is recognized with the 2026 Mipcom Recognition for SDG Impact award, presented in partnership with the United Nations. Furthermore, Globoplay Original "Emergency 53" received the Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award at the Berlinale Series Market, while "The Playoffs," an adrenaline-pumping show about professional soccer, premiered at SXSW London, broadening Globo's presence at international festivals.
The company is also seeing significant success in format adaptations. Portuguese network SIC is adapting "Brazil Avenue" following the success of "Pages Of Life." Turkey's Ay Yapım has extended its deal for three formats, including "The Life She Built" (adapting "Looks & Essence") and "Leyla," the International Emmy-nominated adaptation of "Brazil Avenue," which has sold to over 100 countries. In Greece, Alpha TV and Primavisione are adapting "The Others" and "All The Flowers." Rodrigo Nascimento, Globo's head of business development for EMEA, notes that successful adaptation lies in identifying a story's emotional truths and reimagining them for new audiences and cultures, allowing formats to remain meaningful across borders. With "Brazil Avenue 2" in preparation, Globo continues to build on its legacy of creating globally resonant narratives.
