Global Reach: Ethiopia Champions Stronger BRICS Tourism Ties
Ethiopia is advocating for stronger tourism cooperation among BRICS nations, highlighting the sector's potential for economic growth and cultural exchange. During the BRICS Tourism Ministers' Meeting in Jaipur, Ethiopia showcased its attractions and proposed establishing a BRICS Travel Mart and a Tourism Centre of Excellence to boost collaborative efforts.
Ethiopia has called for stronger cooperation among BRICS countries in tourism, highlighting the sector’s potential to drive economic growth, sustainable development and closer people-to-people connections.
The call was made by the Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi during the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Jaipur, India, where the Ethiopian delegation showcased the country’s cultural heritage and natural attractions. The delegation also advocated greater cooperation in sustainable tourism, digital innovation, artificial intelligence and tourism skills development among member states.
Ethiopia proposed the creation of a dedicated BRICS Travel Mart to promote joint tourism products and investment opportunities, alongside a Tourism Centre of Excellence focused on research and capacity building.
The delegation also highlighted Ethiopian Airlines’ role in strengthening connections between Africa and other BRICS countries, while positioning Addis Ababa as a potential hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. The proposals are intended to turn tourism cooperation into practical initiatives capable of attracting investment and strengthening ties among member states.
Ethiopia Positions Tourism as a BRICS Growth Engine
The Ethiopian Embassy reaffirmed the country’s readiness to work with fellow BRICS members to develop concrete tourism initiatives and expand opportunities across the sector. Ethiopia joined BRICS in January 2024, becoming part of the group’s expansion beyond its original members of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
With its aviation connectivity, cultural assets and growing international profile, Ethiopia is seeking to position tourism as an important avenue for deeper economic cooperation within the bloc.
