Ghana's Future Shockwave: Mahama Unveils $2 Billion Industrialisation Boost!

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana's ambitious $10 billion New Economy Programme, a strategic initiative designed to inject $2 billion annually over four years into the nation's productive sectors. The overarching goal of this programme is to accelerate industrialisation, significantly boost domestic production, create widespread employment opportunities, and firmly establish Ghana as a premier manufacturing and logistics hub for the entire West African region.

Under this transformative programme, a substantial 50% of the allocated funding is specifically earmarked for the vital agriculture and agro-processing sectors, highlighting the government's commitment to strengthening these foundational areas. The remaining portion of the investment will be directed towards bolstering industrial growth and developing the essential infrastructure required to seamlessly connect producers with markets across the country.

President Mahama made this pivotal announcement on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the commencement of construction works on the Afienya Industrial Park. This new industrial park is anticipated to play a crucial role in expanding Ghana's industrial capacity, attracting further foreign and domestic investment, and generating a multitude of new employment opportunities for its citizens.

The President clarified that the development of the Afienya Industrial Park is a direct and strategic response to the increasing investor interest in Ghana, coupled with the recognized limitation of available space at the existing Tema Export Processing Zone, which has become insufficient to accommodate new businesses and expansions.

Adding a critical perspective, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, who also chairs the Board of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, underscored the paramount importance of securing land that is free from litigation to ensure smooth and sustainable industrial development. Drawing from her extensive 22 years of experience at the Bar, she emphasized that genuine cooperation from traditional authorities and local communities is indispensable. She further noted that undisputed access to land is a critical factor for businesses to successfully establish factories, expand their operations without hinderance, and avoid costly delays that can impede progress.

This comprehensive New Economy Programme is poised to strengthen local production capabilities, expand economic prospects for all Ghanaians, and firmly support the nation's aspiration to evolve into a leading regional industrial centre within West Africa.
