Ghana's DStv Pricing Fury: Sam George's Role Under Fire

Ghana’s Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, has come under intense scrutiny and faced widespread criticism from various stakeholders regarding his handling of the ongoing DStv subscription charges controversy. Accusations of inconsistency, egoism, and mismanagement have been leveled against him by minority members of Parliament, the President of IMANI Africa, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency.
Minority members of Parliament’s Communication and Information Committee, led by Ranking Member Matthew Nyindam, have strongly criticized Minister George for what they perceive as a shift in his stance. They recalled his previous emphatic vow not to accept any solution short of a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees, quoting his explicit rejection of package upgrades in favor of direct price cuts. The minority questioned why he now appears to back DStv’s proposal for package upgrades instead of adhering to his initial demand for a significant price reduction. They have demanded a clear explanation from the minister for this change and also sought an account of the revenue generated from a GH₵10,000 levy reportedly imposed on DStv since its operations began in Ghana.
Beyond the issue of inconsistency, Matthew Nyindam further accused Minister George of being egoistic, insincere, and misleading in his public posture and communication surrounding the DStv pricing structure. Nyindam argued that the minister's conduct does not reflect the accountability expected of a cabinet minister, suggesting it has eroded public trust and tarnished the image of the Ministry he serves. The minority even called for presidential intervention, asserting that if the minister wishes to retain his position, he must reconsider his approach, describing his attitude and actions as “arrogant” and
