Genelia Deshmukh recently appeared in Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, and the film held special significance for her. It marked her first major role in a Hindi movie after nearly 13 years, and the overwhelming love she has been receiving has taken her by surprise. Genelia had assumed that people might have forgotten her, but the response proved quite the opposite.
Genelia Deshmukh on her comeback after 13 years in Sitaare Zameen Par; says, “I thought people would forget me”
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Genelia shared, “I didn’t do much work for the last 10 years, maybe for friends, a song here and there. I did two-three films for OTT. I thought people would forget me and I didn’t think I mattered. But it’s refreshing to hear people say all this—that they want to see more. It’s an Aamir Khan film, so of course it would have had a lot more eyeballs. I didn’t think that somewhere in that takeaway, I also exist. It’s been the best compliment—that people want to see more of me. As an actor and human being, if someone wants to see you a lot more, it’s a very special place that not everyone gets.”
She went on to share how Aamir Khan expressed interest in casting her and even reached out to her husband, Riteish Deshmukh, to check if she was currently working. “Aamir asked me to meet RS Prasanna, the director. I auditioned for the role and got it. I know most actors will feel that after 20 years, ‘Why audition?’ But I think it’s a great way of getting a film, so I am very excited that I did it,” Genelia revealed.
Sitaare Zameen Par is regarded as a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan’s 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. The original film told the heartfelt story of Ishaan, a dyslexic child portrayed by Darsheel Safary, and resonated with audiences nationwide for its sensitive depiction of learning disabilities. It also starred Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma.
On the other hand, Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy-drama produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. The film marks the Hindi cinema debut of Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.
The film also features a strong supporting cast, including seasoned actors like Dolly Ahluwalia, Gurpal Singh, Brijendra Kala, and Ankita Sehgal.
