Gemini AI Expands: New Features Hit Google TV

Google has announced a significant update for Google TV, introducing a new suite of AI-powered features and a dedicated short-form video feed that integrates YouTube Shorts directly into the home screen. Central to these enhancements are expanded Gemini capabilities, designed to transform the user's entertainment experience.

Within the Gemini tab, a new “Create” button will empower users to experiment with generative AI tools: Nano Banana and Veo. These innovative features are initially rolling out to Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the U.S., with plans for broader device support in the near future. Nano Banana, Google’s advanced image-generation and editing model, allows users to effortlessly modify photos using simple voice prompts. Users can command the AI to swap outfits, alter backgrounds, or even generate entirely new scenes. Google is actively promoting this feature as a collaborative, living-room experience, encouraging playful interactions such as asking the AI to make a family member wear a humorous outfit for shared laughter.

Complementing Nano Banana, Veo enables users to create dynamic video clips from scratch or animate still images by simply describing a desired scenario. For example, a user could prompt, “make my grandfather moonwalk in space.” These tools collectively aim to provide a more interactive and creative experience for Google TV users.

Google Photos is also receiving substantial upgrades on Google TV, leveraging Gemini’s intelligence. A new Gemini-powered search function allows users to quickly locate specific memories, such as vacations or birthday parties, without sifting through their entire photo library. The search results are presented in an easily browsable format, facilitating full-screen viewing or the initiation of a slideshow. Furthermore, a novel “Remix” feature allows users to apply artistic styles like watercolor or oil painting to their photographs, adding a personalized touch.

To enhance visual storytelling, “Dynamic Slideshows” introduces animated layouts, sophisticated frames, and curated color treatments. Users can transform any Google Photos collection into a vivid, TV-ready slideshow by simply selecting Google Photos within their screensaver settings, providing a seamless way to relive cherished moments.

Beyond AI, Google is also embracing the burgeoning trend of short-form video content. Soon, a new “Short videos for you” row will be prominently displayed on the Google TV home screen, commencing with content sourced from YouTube Shorts. This strategic move, however, follows YouTube’s recent introduction of an option to hide Shorts on mobile, indicating a diverse range of user preferences. Nevertheless, Google has hinted at potential future expansions beyond YouTube Shorts, possibly incorporating content from other platforms. This expansion is already foreshadowed by Instagram’s TV app, which became available on Google TV devices in the U.S. earlier this year.
