Gauteng Braces for Historic Cold Snap as Snow Looms

Gauteng residents are advised to prepare for what is anticipated to be one of the coldest weeks in several years, as an intense cold front is projected to sweep across the province next week. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has indicated that this significant weather event, accompanied by a cut-off low, will initially impact parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Eastern Cape starting Sunday. By Monday evening, the cold front is expected to reach Gauteng, bringing a dramatic shift in weather conditions.

Following a relatively mild winter season for Gauteng, residents can expect temperatures to plummet significantly across the province. In Johannesburg, Sunday will see relatively warm conditions with a high of 20°C. However, a rapid change is forecast for Monday as the cold front fully moves in, with temperatures dropping to a maximum of just 14°C and a minimum of 6°C. Tuesday is predicted to be the coldest day of the week, with Johannesburg's temperatures expected to range between a minimum of 4°C and a maximum of only 6°C.

Adding to the severe cold, there is a distinct possibility of snow in Johannesburg and other areas of Gauteng as the cold front intensifies. Regional weather service Gauteng Weather has also emphasized the potential for snowfall when the system reaches the province on Monday evening. They posted on X, stating, “Snow & heavy rain possible in Gauteng late Monday into Tuesday due to the cold snap. Only some models are picking up snow. This early forecast is subject to change, but we’re closely monitoring developments.” This highlights the seriousness of the approaching weather system and the need for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for extreme cold and potential snow.
