South Africa is mourning the loss of veteran actor, playwright and musician Seputla Sebogodi, who died at the age of 63 after complications related to diabetes, prompting an outpouring of tributes from government officials, colleagues and the country's creative community.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile described Sebogodi as one of South Africa's most gifted and influential performers, saying his contribution to the arts would be remembered for generations.
In a statement, the Gauteng provincial government honoured Sebogodi's enduring impact on television, theatre and music, with Maile praising his authenticity and versatility on stage and screen. He extended condolences to the actor's family, friends and colleagues, saying Sebogodi's legacy would continue to inspire future generations of performers.
Sebogodi enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades and became a household name through productions including Bophelo Ke Semphekgo, Generations, Scandal!, Rhythm City and The River. He also remained deeply committed to theatre, with his latest production, Black Moon, premiering at this year's National Arts Festival in Makhanda just days before his death.
The National Arts Festival described the production as one of the standout theatre offerings of the 2026 festival.
His family confirmed that he died on 15 July following complications related to diabetes and requested privacy as they mourn their loss. Tributes have continued to pour in from fellow actors, political leaders and fans, many remembering Sebogodi not only for his memorable performances but also for mentoring young talent and helping shape South Africa's theatre and television industries.
