Gas Explosion in Onitsha Claims Life, Injures Several

A gas explosion at the Onitsha Head Bridge market in Anambra State has resulted in one fatality and six injuries. The incident occurred at a plumbing market along Uga Street on Friday. According to the Anambra State Police Command's Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations suggest that a welding gas cylinder exploded due to excessive heat exposure while a welder was working on a metal.
Police operatives from the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters, along with public-spirited individuals, assisted in rescue operations. The six injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, while the deceased has been placed in a morgue. Authorities have secured the area to prevent opportunistic crimes.
State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, expressed his concern over the incident and emphasized the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of gas cylinder equipment. He also stressed the necessity of secure gas cylinder storage and adherence to manufacturers' instructions and safety guidelines to prevent future incidents.
