Galaxy-Sized Success: Super Mario Movie Conquers Box Office, Sparks Merch Mania!

The highly anticipated animated sequel, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” has launched into theaters with a King Koopa-size opening, rapidly accumulating $59.1 million domestically through its first two days. Having added an impressive $24.6 million to its haul on Thursday alone, the film is poised for massive profitability given its $110 million production cost. Backed by Illumination and Universal, in close collaboration with game developer Nintendo, the movie is building on the success of its predecessor, 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was one of the biggest hits of the post-pandemic era, grossing over $1.3 billion globally.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has also performed exceptionally well overseas, picking up $33.9 million on Wednesday from 78 markets. Notable international performances include Mexico ($6.7 million), the U.K. and Ireland ($4.3 million), Germany ($3.8 million), Spain ($3 million), and France ($2.9 million). Universal’s official projection anticipates $128.2 million over the opening weekend and $186 million over its first five days. However, exhibitors and independent tracking services are more optimistic, estimating between $190 million to $200 million by Sunday. The film is expected to generate at least $175 million overseas, potentially bringing its global tally to approximately $360 million to $375 million.
The film’s stellar voice cast features Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black reprising their roles from the first movie. They are joined by new additions Donald Glover, Glen Powell, and Benny Safdie. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned to direct the sequel, which is based on the beloved original “Super Mario Galaxy” video game. In the movie’s narrative, characters traverse the galaxy, earning coins by collecting Lumas – the star-shaped creatures essential for powering Mario and his friends. Encounters with Bowser Jr. necessitate battles in his UFO to continue advancing.
