Future of Film Unveiled: AI-Generated Documentary 'Post Truth' Makes History with International Festival Premiere
The groundbreaking AI-generated feature-length documentary titled “Post Truth,” which previously enjoyed a theatrical release across Turkey this past summer, is now poised for its international debut. The film is set to launch at the upcoming Warsaw Film Festival, scheduled to run from October 10-19. This English-language work is the brainchild of generative AI artist Alkan Avcıoğlu, who meticulously crafted “Post Truth” using artificial intelligence for every aspect of its production, including all visuals, sound, music, and voice elements.
“Post Truth” delves deeply into humanity’s complex relationship with technology, exploring how technological advancements have shaped the modern world. The narrative was co-written by director Alkan Avcıoğlu and multidisciplinary artist Vikki Bardot. The documentary draws significant inspiration from the grand cinematic vision of filmmakers such as Godfrey Reggio, renowned for “Koyaanisqatsi,” and makes references to other influential directors like Andrej Tarkovskij, Jean-Luc Godard, and Leos Carax.
According to its promotional materials, the film carries a “self-reflexive critical tone, focusing on how technological thinking led the world to an era where facts don’t matter anymore.” This thematic exploration resonated with audiences and critics during its Turkish release. Turkish arthouse distributor Başka Sinema facilitated its showing in approximately 20 cities in July, where it garnered positive reviews from local critics.
Bartek Pulcyn, the programming director for the Warsaw Film Festival, highlighted the growing integration of AI in cinema. In a statement, Pulcyn remarked, “Artificial intelligence is entering the world of cinema more and more boldly — often supporting human work in hidden ways, sometimes even replacing it.” He further emphasized the documentary’s significance, stating, “‘Post Truth’ uses AI openly to ask fundamental questions about the present and the future of the world and humanity.”
Alkan Avcıoğlu himself commented on the film’s conceptual depth, asserting, “‘Post Truth’ is not a cheap trick showcasing AI or a gimmick, but a conceptual, in-depth exploration of the boundaries of what a documentary can be.” Prior to his pioneering work in AI storytelling, Avcıoğlu had a career as a film critic before transitioning into film acquisitions. He ultimately departed the traditional film industry in 2022 to dedicate himself to exploring AI’s capabilities in storytelling.
Since this shift, Avcıoğlu has emerged as a prominent AI visual artist, with his works being exhibited at major international art fairs, including Paris Photo and Art Basel Miami. His artistic creations have also been featured in auctions at prestigious houses like Christie’s. Most recently, he collaborated with acclaimed photographer Edward Burtynsky on an exhibition that opened in New York this month, further cementing his reputation at the intersection of art and artificial intelligence.
