Fubara's Triumphant Return: Rivers Governor Breaks Silence After Reinstatement, Thanks Tinubu

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, addressed the citizens on Friday, September 19, 2025, following the expiration of a challenging six-month state of emergency. The emergency rule, which led to the suspension of democratic institutions, was declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025, in response to an intense political crisis within the state.
In his statewide broadcast, Governor Fubara reflected on the "enormously challenging" period, explaining his decision to abide by the President's declaration and cooperate with the National Assembly. He stated that this choice was guided by his firm conviction that "no sacrifice was too great to secure peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State," which also led him to resist pressures to challenge the constitutionality of the emergency rule.
Governor Fubara extended his profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his "fatherly disposition and decisive interventions" in resolving the political crisis. He specifically acknowledged the President's role in brokering a successful peace process that brought together all major parties, including himself, former Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This intervention, Fubara affirmed, resulted in a collective agreement to "bury the hatchet" and embrace reconciliation, effectively putting the political crisis behind them and restoring peace and stability to the state, albeit with "hard lessons learnt."
Reaffirming his "utmost loyalty and eternal gratitude" to President Tinubu, Governor Fubara pledged never to take the President’s kindness for granted. He addressed concerns raised by those who expressed fears and frustrations over the nature of the peace process, assuring them that "nothing has been irretrievably lost" and that there remains "ample opportunity for necessary adjustments, continued reconciliation, and inclusiveness." He urged all stakeholders to embrace this moment as a fresh beginning, encouraging them to work together with renewed hope and determination to build a stronger, more peaceful, and prosperous Rivers State, emphasizing the adage that "the costliest peace is cheaper than the cheapest war."
Despite the turbulence, the Governor highlighted his administration's credible milestones over the past two years in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He pledged an immediate return to the path of governance and development, committing to completing ongoing projects without neglecting them or starving them of funds. His administration's immediate responsibilities include reviving the economy, protecting lives and property, and improving the wellbeing of all Rivers people. Fubara also committed to working harmoniously with the Rivers State House of Assembly to recover lost ground and accelerate the state's social and economic advancement, renewing his pledge to serve with the fear of God, humility, and a high sense of duty.
Earlier on Friday, Governor Fubara was met with a massive reception upon his arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, where he was welcomed by numerous supporters, including former Commissioners and other political figures. Expressing humility at the turnout, he regarded the reception as a "reaffirmation of the bond" between his government and the people. He assured residents that his administration would continue to work in their best interest and continuously strive to carry everyone along. Governor Fubara concluded by sincerely thanking the resilient people of Rivers State for their patience, courage, and peaceful conduct during the six months of emergency rule.
