Fresh low pressure may bring heavy rain till July 4: IMD

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by Sunday is expected to bring widespread rain in north Odisha districts until July 4, the IMD said on Saturday.IMD has issued warning for heavy rain and thundershower in 16 districts, while very heavy rain is likely in Keonjhar, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts until Monday, after which the intensity may reduce."An upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal persisted over the same region and extended up to 7.6km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal by Sunday. Subsequently, it is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha and Jharkhand," read the IMD's bulletin.Light to moderate rainfall occurred at many places, with heavy rainfall at one or two places over Keonjhar, Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak districts in the last 24 hours.

Banspal received 106.3mm, followed by 88.3mm at Hatadihi in Keonjhar district, and 85mm each in Remuna in Balasore and Kaptipada in Mayurbhanj district.The IMD bulletin said squally weather is likely to prevail with wind speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph along and off coasts from Saturday to Tuesday. Sea conditions are likely to be very rough, and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea until Tuesday.Several low-lying areas in Balasore and Remuna experienced waterlogging following spells of heavy rain. The Jamughat bridge connecting Udala and Balasore was washed away, disrupting vehicular movement.The special relief commissioner (SRC) has asked district administrations to remain alert for any rise in water level or urban flooding.
