Former NBA star Mike Bibby lands college head-coaching job
Former NBA point guard Mike Bibby is the new head coach of a Division I college basketball team.
Bibby agreed to a deal on Monday to become the new men's head basketball coach at Sacramento State, according to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania.

The gig is Bibby's first as a coach at the collegiate level. He previously coached at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona, from 2013-19, first as an assistant and the head coach. He led the school, which is his alma mater, to four state championships. Bibby led Shadow Mountain to their first-ever state title when he played for the school in 1996.
Bibby also had a brief stint as the head coach at Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix in 2019.
Charania notes that Sacramento State is set to open a new basketball facility on campus next fall. The Hornets are committed to growing their athletic programs, and adding a recognizable name like Bibby should aid in accomplishing that goal.
Bibby spent 14 seasons in the NBA, the bulk of which were with the Sacramento Kings. The 46-year-old was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1999. He finished his career with averages of 14.7 points, 5.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Sacramento State went 7-25 and finished 10th in the Big Sky Conference last season. The school has never made an NCAA Tournament or NIT appearance.
