Mike Sonko Rescues Kimani Mbugua, Sends Him to Rehab

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again stepped in to assist former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who recently relapsed after a previous rehabilitation stint. Sonko, who initially sponsored Kimani's rehabilitation earlier in 2024, expressed his disappointment on social media regarding the relapse but reaffirmed his commitment to helping the journalist recover.

Sonko deployed his Sonko Rescue Team to locate Kimani, who was eventually found in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu County. The team immediately transported him to Sonko's headquarters, providing him with fresh clothes, a shower, and food to ensure his comfort before transferring him for professional help. Sonko personally engaged Kimani in extensive counseling, reinforcing his dedication to supporting Kimani's recovery journey.

Initially planning to fly Kimani to Mombasa, Sonko adjusted his plans after assessing Kimani's condition, opting instead to have him driven to the Mombasa Women’s Rehabilitation Centre. The former governor emphasized that he would monitor Kimani's progress at the rehabilitation facility and, at this stage, chose not to involve Kimani's family.

Sonko also revealed his intention to offer Kimani an opportunity to work at the rehabilitation center upon his full recovery, similar to the role former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng has taken on after her rehabilitation. "I have chosen not to involve Kimani’s family at this stage, but I will ensure that he remains at the rehabilitation centre. Upon his full recovery, he will have the opportunity to work there, similar to Conjestina Achieng, who has been discharged and is now providing counselling services at the centre," Sonko stated.

During Eid celebrations, Sonko welcomed Kimani into his home, gifting him new clothes, including a kanzu and keffiyeh, and sharing a meal. Sonko also requested that Kimani remain at the rehabilitation center until he fully recovers, underscoring his commitment in a phone call with a rehab center official. He also spoke with Conjestina Achieng, who is also undergoing treatment at the facility.

Sonko acknowledged that his efforts to rehabilitate journalists struggling with mental health issues have been both rewarding and challenging. He remains dedicated to helping those in need and urged society to offer support rather than criticism. Sonko's latest intervention has elicited mixed reactions online, with some praising his humanitarian efforts and others calling for sustainable long-term solutions for affected individuals.
