Marvin Sapp Addresses Controversy Over Holding Members Over KSh 5m Offering

In a recent Facebook post, popular US pastor Marvin Sapp addressed the controversy surrounding his request for ushers to close the doors of his church during an offering collection. The incident occurred during an international gathering where Sapp challenged attendees to contribute KSh 5 million (approximately $37,000 USD).
According to Sapp, his directive to close the doors was misinterpreted by those unfamiliar with church practices. He clarified that his intention was not to hold people hostage or cause offense but to create a secure, focused, and reverent environment for giving and handling resources. He emphasized that financial stewardship and accountability were key motivations behind his actions.
Sapp explained that he challenged 2,000 individuals, both in person and virtually, to donate KSh 2,000 each, while also urging leadership to contribute KSh 10,000. He stated that he personally gave a significant amount that evening. He defended his actions by referencing 1 Chronicles 29, where David encouraged the people to give generously for the building of the temple.
He also pointed out that conferences have budgets, and one of his responsibilities as the assigned ministerial gift was to help raise the conference budget, calling it an act of stewardship rather than manipulation.
Sapp acknowledged that in the age of social media, snippets of events are often shared without context, leading to assumptions and misunderstandings. He invited people to understand the full picture and the movement behind his request.
In contrast, a past incident involving Pastor James Ng'ang'a of Neno Evangelism Centre showed a different approach. Ng'ang'a was seen discarding offerings in his church, deeming them insufficient. This act drew criticism from Kenyans who felt that a man of God should not demean church members' offerings.
Sapp concluded by stating that he owes people honor, clarity, and truth, and he will always provide that.
